Neoprene

Neoprene

CAS number: 9010-98-4

Originally meant to be an oil-resistant substitute for natural rubber, Neoprene is now commonly used to mass produce gaskets, seals, O rings and other diverse applications. This family of synthetic rubbers is produced by the polymerization of chloroprene. Also known as polychloroprene, its primary composition is carbon, hydrogen and chlorine polymers, which are cross-linked to give it its favorable properties like thermal stability, chemical inertness and resistance to water and corrosive mediums.

Properties:

  • Heat resistance: Operates in temperatures up to 275 degrees Fahrenheit and doesn’t physically degrade at such high temperatures.
  • Cold resistant: Holds down to -50 degrees Fahrenheit and begins solidifying at temperatures below 0 degrees, rendering itself non-functional after that point.
  • Collaborative: As a basic bonding agent, Neoprene can be maneuvered to attach mechanically with several types of metal.
  • Weather resistant: Long-lasting in outdoor environments with a low oxidation rate along with a high sun and ozone resistance.
  • Chemical resistance: Resists petroleum-based mixtures methyl and ethyl alcohols as well as alkalines, mineral acids and some salt solutions.

Application:
Neoprenes chemical inertion benefits its application in hoses, gaskets and corrosion resistant coatings. On its own, it is a routine choice for adhesives, gasoline hoses, wetsuits, and orthopedic braces as well as for noise cancellation and construction of buildings as a load bearing base. Its versatility makes it practical for applications like practical laptops, tablet holders, remote controls, mouse pads, electric pianos, aquatic clothing and wheelchairs too.
