Buna S or Styrene-Butadiene (SBR) is an elastomeric copolymer consisting of styrene and butadiene. Bu stands for butadiene, Na for sodium and S for styrene.
Properties:
Besides having high tensile, impact strength and resilience, SBR withstands abrasion and proves to be a long lasting elastomer. Though not as flexible as natural rubber, its properties stand out in extreme temperatures. Water, organic acid, ketone, chemical, alcohol and aldehyde are some other materials that it can withstand. This type of rubber also ages better than natural rubber and accommodates large amounts of filler, which is used to enhance its properties.
Application:
SBR is used across a broad range of applications like car tyres, shoe soles and heels, gaskets, drive couplings, automotive parts and mechanical rubber goods. A large proportion of SBR is also used in latex form as an adhesive. Some other applications include speaker driver manufacturers as well, waterproofing systems, rubber cutting boards, batteries and heat exchangers as well.
